Red Wine in the Summer? Absolutely! Here's How to Drink It
Aug 11, 2026
Red Wine Doesn't Take a Summer Vacation
There's a persistent myth that red wine is a cold-weather drink — something you reach for by the fireplace in January, not on a patio in August. We'd like to respectfully disagree.
The truth is, red wine is perfectly at home in summer. It just requires a little more intention. Here's how to drink it well when the temperature climbs.
The Real Issue: Temperature, Not Season
The reason people shy away from red wine in summer usually comes down to one thing: serving temperature. Most reds get poured too warm — straight off a counter or out of a warm car — and warm wine tastes flat, alcoholic, and heavy.
The fix is simple. Serve your reds slightly cooler than you think:
- Lighter reds (Pinot Noir, Grenache): 55–60°F — about 20 minutes in the fridge before opening
- Full-bodied reds (Cabernet Sauvignon, red blends): 60–65°F — 10–15 minutes in the fridge takes the edge off without muting the fruit
That small adjustment changes everything. A properly chilled Cab on a summer evening is one of the great pleasures.
THE SMITH Reds Worth Reaching For This Summer
Our California Red Blend is built for the table — and the season. Fruit-forward, smooth, and made without additives, it's the kind of wine that works equally well with grilled food, a cheese board, or nothing at all. Serve it with a brief chill and let it breathe for 15 minutes. Summer sorted.
Our Paso Robles Cabernet has a natural warmth to it — ripe dark fruit, structured tannins, and a finish that lingers. In summer, that richness pairs beautifully with anything coming off the grill. Decant it, chill it slightly, and it holds its own against the boldest summer flavors.
Summer Pairings for Red Wine
Red wine and summer food are a natural match — you just have to lean into the right combinations.
Off the grill This is where red wine shines in summer. The char, smoke, and fat from grilled meats are exactly what Cabernet Sauvignon was made for. Burgers, lamb chops, skirt steak, grilled sausages — all excellent.
Charcuterie and cheese boards A summer staple that pairs effortlessly with both our red blend and Cab. Aged cheeses, cured meats, olives, and stone fruit all work beautifully alongside a slightly chilled red.
Tomato-forward dishes Peak summer tomatoes — in a pasta, a bruschetta, or a simple salad — mirror the acidity in red wine in a way that feels made for the season.
Grilled vegetables Eggplant, portobello mushrooms, zucchini, and peppers all have enough body and earthiness to stand up to a red. A great option for vegetarian summer entertaining.
How to Serve Red Wine in the Summer
A few practical tips for getting it right:
- Chill briefly before serving — 10–20 minutes in the fridge, depending on the wine
- Use a wine tote if you're heading outdoors — the
Connoisseur Wine Tote keeps your bottle protected and at temperature longer - Decant full-bodied reds — even 20 minutes in a decanter opens up the wine and softens the tannins; the
Raye Angled Crystal Bordeaux Decanter & Wine Glass Set is ideal for this - Keep pours modest — smaller pours stay cooler in the glass longer, especially outdoors
The Case for Red Wine All Year
Wine doesn't follow the calendar. The best bottle is the one that fits the moment — the food, the company, the occasion. In summer, that might be a rosé on a Tuesday and a Cabernet on a Saturday night after a long day at the grill.
At THE SMITH, we make our wines without additives so they behave the way wine is supposed to: honest, expressive, and good at the table in any season.
